ChatGPT: Everything You Need to Know

Posted on December 21, 2022 by Subhasish Nanda

An artificial intelligence chatbot has taken over the internet. People are using ChatGPT to compose music, understand complex topics, make jokes, write movie scripts, and even debug computer code. It only took five days for the bot to hit its million user mark.

Although AI is getting good at generating images, it’s also capable of producing incredible texts also.

This a detailed blog that explains how to use ChatGPT. But before getting into the details, let’s first take a closer look at what ChatGPT is and why it’s causing so much hype.

What is ChatGPT?

An OpenAI foundation project, ChatGPT is one of a series of text-generation AI systems from the GPT family. Its previous project, GPT 3, generated words based on prompts such as “write me a poem.” It worked more like DALL-E for text.

The ChatGPT service is more like an instant messaging service, in that you can chat with the GPT AI in real time. It resembles SmarterChild on MSN Messenger or AOL, except that this works so much better.

The dialogue format allows ChatGPT to respond to follow-up questions, admit mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests, according to OpenAI.

As part of the system’s “feedback” period, anyone can access the tool for free. After that, OpenAI plans to use the user feedback to improve the final version. There is a limitation of the current system in that it does not have internet access.

Despite still being in its infancy, ChatGPT is showing promise as a multi-utility AI tool. The prototype was released on Nov. 30, 2022. As well as idea development, gameplay, scriptwriting, and more, you can also use the tool to chat about any topic of your interest.

Questions you can ask

OpenAI suggests a few categories, such as explaining physics, asking for birthday party ideas, and getting programming help.

One wacky example shows a command to write “a folk song about writing a rust program and fighting with lifetime errors.” ChatGPT’s expertise is broad, and its ability to engage in a conversation is notable.

People are displaying the AI’s ability to write code and generate art prompts on Twitter.

Who created ChatGPT?

The goal of OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research company, is to develop a “safe and beneficial” artificial general intelligence system.

First, GPT-3 generated text that sounded like a human wrote it, followed by DALL-E, which created what’s now called “generative art” based on text prompts.

GPT-3 and its most recent update, GPT 3.5, are examples of a type of AI called large language models. They are trained to generate text based on what they see, and they can be trained automatically — typically with huge quantities of computer power over a period of weeks. For example, the training process could find a random paragraph of text and delete some words, ask the AI to fill them in, compare the result to the original and then reward the AI system for coming as close for possible. Repeating this process over and over can lead to a sophisticated ability to generate text.

Is ChatGPT free?

Yes, for now. OpenAI charges for DALL-E art once you exceed a basic free level of usage.

Limitations of using ChatGPT

OpenAI emphasizes that ChatGPT is capable of giving you wrong answers. Sometimes, it’ll point out its own shortcomings.

However, the fact that it answers at all is a notable development in computing. Computers are notoriously literal, refusing to work unless you follow exact syntax and interface requirements. In addition to revealing a more human-friendly style of interaction, large language models can generate answers that are a combination of copying and creativity.

Can ChatGPT write software?

It can retrace human steps, but you have to make sure you don’t bungle programming concepts or use software that doesn’t work. ChatGPT can generate actual programming code, but there are caveats. For a reason, StackOverflow bans ChatGPT-generated software.

One developer, Cobalt Robotics Chief Technology Officer Erik Schluntz, tweeted that ChatGPT provides useful enough advice that he hasn’t opened StackOverflow once over the past three days.

What you cannot explore in ChatGPT?

OpenAI aims to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity through ChatGPT by weeding out “inappropriate” requests.

Whenever you ask ChatGPT what’s off limits, it tells you: anything “that is discriminatory, offensive, or inappropriate.” You cannot ask it to engage in illegal activities. This includes racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, or any other discriminatory or hateful question.

ChatGPT vs Google Search

ChatGPT is a useful tool for asking questions and getting answers.

Often ChatGPT’s answers will far surpass what Google will suggest, so it’s easy to imagine GPT-3 is a rival to Google Chrome.

Since ChatGPT only gives you raw text, there are no links or citations to verify its veracity. Despite the fact that you may not see something like ChatGPT in Google search results directly, Google has built large language models of its own and uses artificial intelligence extensively in search already.

What’s next for OpenAI?

GPT 4 will be even more impressive, and likely more efficient, than its predecessor.

A neural network called Whisper, which is close to human-level speech recognition, was announced by the organisation in September 2022. We’re expecting updates and improvements on this project as well. There’s also DALL-E 2, which many will have seen examples of. We will likely see an even more capable tool, dubbed DALL-E 3. As for everything else, we’ll have to wait and see.
